FAQs

About Pop Cultures & Jun Kombucha

What is Jun kombucha and how is it different from regular kombucha?
Jun kombucha is often called the 'champagne of kombucha' and uses green tea and honey to ferment, rather than black tea and refined sugar. This gives jun a silky, more delicate flavour profile that's generally less vinegary than traditional kombucha. The honey also adds natural enzymes and antimicrobial properties. Our Jun is brewed in oak barrels, which adds an extra smoothness and depth of flavour you won't find anywhere else.
Why do you use honey instead of refined sugar?
We use 100% pure honey because it creates a smoother, more refined taste and provides additional health benefits that others simply can't match. Honey contains natural enzymes, antioxidants, and trace minerals that survive the fermentation process, it also has a naturally low glycemic impact and the fermentation process creates a uniquely complex flavour profile
What does Pop Cultures taste like?
Jun has a lighter, smoother taste than regular kombucha - think 'feel good flavour' rather than 'medicinal vinegar'. It's naturally effervescent with a subtle sweetness and a clean finish. Our flavours are created using 100% pure fruit and whole spices, so each bottle has a bright, authentic taste - no additives or 'natural sweeteners' here. If you've tried regular kombucha and found it too tart or funky, Jun is a revelation - it's the gateway kombucha for people who thought they didn't like kombucha!
Is your kombucha alcoholic?
Like all fermented drinks, our Jun contains trace amounts of alcohol (typically less than 0.5% ABV), which is below the legal threshold for alcoholic beverages in the UK. This is a natural byproduct of fermentation and is comparable to the alcohol content in ripe fruit or fresh bread. It's safe for most people, but if you're avoiding alcohol completely (pregnancy, medication, recovery), we'd recommend checking with your doctor first.
Is Jun kombucha suitable for vegans?
This is a great question! Our Jun is made with honey, so it's vegetarian but not strictly vegan. However, many people following a plant-based lifestyle do choose to include bee products, especially when they're sustainably sourced. We work with Hilltop honey who choose their suppliers carefully. They are also B-Corp, organic and Fairtrade. If you're plant-curious or flexitarian, our Jun offers incredible gut health benefits - but we respect that it's a personal choice for those following strict vegan principles.
What are the health benefits of Jun kombucha?
Jun is packed with probiotics (beneficial bacteria), organic acids, enzymes, and B vitamins that support digestive health and immune function. The fermentation process creates these living cultures naturally. Many people drink kombucha daily for improved gut health, better digestion, increased energy, and immune support. That said, we're a small batch brewery, not doctors - we always recommend listening to your body and consulting health professionals for specific medical advice.

Storage & Freshness

How should I store Jun kombucha?
Always keep your bottles refrigerated. Jun is a live product and the cold temperature keeps the fermentation process gentle and slow. Once you receive your delivery, pop it straight in the fridge. Don't worry if it gets slightly warm during delivery - just chill it when it arrives and it'll be fine.
How long does it last once opened?
Once opened, drink your Jun within 3-5 days for the best flavour and carbonation. The probiotics are still alive, so it will continue to ferment slowly even in the fridge. You might notice it becomes slightly more tart over time - that's natural and still perfectly safe to drink, just a bit tangier!
Why is there sediment in my bottle?
That cloudy sediment is actually the best bit - it's live yeast and beneficial bacteria! This is a sign you're drinking real, unpasteurised kombucha. Give the bottle a gentle swirl before pouring to distribute the probiotics evenly. If you prefer a clearer drink, pour carefully and leave the sediment at the bottom, but you'll be missing out on some of the gut health goodness!
Can Jun kombucha explode?
Our kombucha is live and naturally carbonated, so there's pressure in the bottle. We filter the large yeasty bits out to ensure control, but because it's a living product, always chill them well before opening. If a bottle has been delayed in transit, please treat with caution and contact us if there is any doubt or if the lid is swollen. Think of it like opening champagne - treat it with respect and you'll be fine!

Taste & Usage

Which flavour should I try first?
If you're new to Jun or kombucha in general, we'd recommend starting with our mixed case so you can discover your favourite. Each flavour has a unique character - some are fruity and bright, others are spiced and warming. Most people find they love flavours they wouldn't have expected, so variety is key when you're starting out.
When is the best time to drink Jun kombucha?
Many people love it first thing in the morning for a gentle energy boost, or with meals to aid digestion. Some drink it in the afternoon as a healthy alternative to sugary drinks. Because it contains probiotics and a tiny amount of natural caffeine from the green tea, we'd suggest avoiding it right before bed if you're sensitive to caffeine. Really though, there's no wrong time - drink it when it feels good for you!
Can I use Jun kombucha in cocktails or recipes?
Absolutely! Jun's delicate, champagne-like quality makes it brilliant for cocktails - try it in place of prosecco or tonic water. It also works beautifully in salad dressings, marinades, or shrubs. The live cultures do break down with heat, so if you're after the probiotic benefits, use it in cold applications. But feel free to experiment - some of our customers make amazing kombucha ice lollies!
